Anima Journal ("we", "our") is designed to protect your privacy while helping you preserve your life story. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and who we share it with.
Journal entries (text and audio recordings) you create
Biography interview responses
Account information (email, name) from Sign in with Apple
Location data (only if you grant permission)
Usage information (e.g. subscription status)
Journal entries are first stored on your device. If you sign in, entries are also synced to our secure servers (hosted on Cloudflare) over HTTPS-encrypted
connections so you can access them across your devices.
Anima Journal offers optional AI features (transcription, Insights, voice biography interviews). These features require sending your data to OpenAI, the
makers of ChatGPT. You must explicitly consent to this before any data is sent, either during onboarding or by enabling "AI Services" in Settings.
When AI features are enabled, the following is sent to OpenAI via our secure proxy:
Audio recordings → OpenAI Whisper (for transcription)
Transcripts and questions → OpenAI GPT (for Insights, biography interview, summaries)
Text prompts → OpenAI TTS (for generating spoken interviewer voice)
OpenAI's API terms state that data sent via their API is not used to train their models. Data is retained by OpenAI for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring and
